Laboratory training

Laboratories attended as an internal student, University of Milan

01Laboratory of extractive and synthetic drug preparation

Under the supervision of Prof. Stefania Villa: the main techniques of extraction from plant and animal matrices, organic synthesis of active ingredients and intermediates, purification by crystallisation and chromatography; chemical-analytical control methods and the basics of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), with direct exposure to pharmaceutical development and manufacturing processes.

02Medicines analysis laboratories

Under the supervision of Prof. Giulio Vistoli: classical pharmacological methods for the identification and titration of active ingredients, from specific chemical reactions to purity assays, together with basic spectroscopic and potentiometric techniques, in compliance with the Official Pharmacopoeia.

03Organic chemistry laboratory

Under the supervision of Prof. Maria Luisa Gelmi: practical skills in the synthesis of organic molecules and pharmaceutical intermediates, characterisation of products by physico-chemical parameters (melting point, polarimetry, solubility) and chromatographic reaction monitoring, with a first approach to multi-step synthesis planning.

04Drug analysis laboratories I and II

Under the supervision of Prof. Giancarlo Aldini: classical quantitative analysis (colorimetric and spectrophotometric reactions for active substances in simple mixtures), then modern instrumental techniques (HPLC, basic IR and NMR spectroscopy) and the validation of analytical methods in terms of accuracy, precision and reproducibility.

05Pharmaceutical technology laboratory

Under the supervision of Prof. Andrea Gazzaniga, Prof. Matteo Cerea and Prof. Francesco Cilurzo: preparation of solid, liquid and semi-solid dosage forms (tablets, capsules, solutions, suspensions, emulsions, ointments, suppositories); granulation, compression and coating processes; quality tests such as hardness, friability, disintegration and dissolution; principles of biopharmaceutics and oral bioavailability, in line with GLP and GMP standards.

06Applied biochemistry laboratory

Under the supervision of Prof. Donatella Caruso: biochemical and cellular analyses applied to pharmaceutical and nutraceutical compounds, with a focus on molecular mechanisms of action, interactions with metabolic pathways and the functional profile of extracts and bioactive substances of clinical interest.

07Preclinical in-vitro research

At the laboratories of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Milan, under the supervision of Prof. Paolo Magni: mechanisms of action of antihypertensive nutraceuticals: effects on endothelial and vascular smooth-muscle cells, pathways regulating vascular tone (nitric oxide, redox systems, renin–angiotensin modulation) and the antioxidant and vasodilatory properties of the tested compounds.

08Clinical research

At Niguarda Hospital, Milan, under the supervision of Prof. Paolo Magni: therapeutic applications of nutraceuticals in the control of cholesterol levels and blood pressure and in the prevention of cardiovascular disease.
